These days, lots of different things fall under the category of “self-care”. It truly does lie in the eye of the self-carer. The most popular ways that taking care of ourselves have taken form are as a result of burnout. We get on top of our needs when it feels extremely necessary; when we’ve overworked and lack rest, mostly. For some people, when it gets to that point, some of the treats that we go for as “self-care” don’t tend to be the healthiest options.
Everything in moderation is the way to go. When we deprive ourselves altogether, we risk taking it overboard when we finally do decide to treat ourselves. What are some ways to indulge in self-care as an everyday practice, in ways that feel good to the whole of us, AND keeps us from feeling overwhelmed and burnt out? We’ve got you covered.
- Exercise. An oldie, but a goodie. Moving our bodies on a regular basis is not only great for how we look, but it can make a huge difference in how we feel. We boost our confidence and release stress with a regular workout routine. You can’t beat that.
- Meditation. However you do it is up to you, but taking the time to quiet the mind is truly a miracle worker. We take on so much stress and anxiety with the habit of overthinking. Focus on your breath and see how, overtime, you can make a meditative practice out of anything.
- Journaling. A lot like meditation, doing a brain dump on paper can put things that seemed heavy into perspective, and rid you of the stress of it all.
- Therapy. Despite what many believe, therapy is for everyone. It’s nice to have an unbiased person on hand to help you sort out your thoughts and navigate your everyday life in healthy ways.
These are just some basics that are relatively easy to create a routine around. When you have self-care as your default, you feel better taken care of. Don’t wait until you’re burnt out, what can you implement today?
